FRANKENSTEIN – UNIVERSAL STUDIOS MONSTERS “Glow In The Dark” Boris Karloff RARE – MISP
UNIVERSAL MONSTERS FRANKENSTEIN “Glow In The Dark”by UNIVERSAL STUDIOS: Frankenstein is a 1931 American pre-Code horror monster film from Universal Pictures directed by James Whale and adapted from the play by Peggy Webling (which in turn is based on the novel of the same name by Mary Shelley), about a scientist and his assistant who dig up corpses to build a man animated by electricity, but his assistant accidentally gives the creature an abnormal, murderer’s brain. The resultant monster is portrayed by Boris Karloff in the film.
The movie stars Colin Clive, Mae Clarke, John Boles and Karloff, and features Dwight Frye and Edward van Sloan. The Webling play was adapted by John L. Balderston and the screenplay written by Francis Edward Faragoh and Garrett Fort with uncredited contributions from Robert Florey and John Russell. The make-up artist was Jack Pierce. A hit with both audiences and critics, the film was followed by multiple sequels and has become arguably the most iconic horror film in history.
In 1991, the Library of Congress selected Frankenstein for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
ABOUT THE PIECE – RARE SERIES ONE Cornerstone Piece
Sculpted by Oluf W. Hartvigson: Released in 2001 by Sideshow Toy, FRANKENSTEIN GLOW IN THE DARK – Boris Karloff Edition, was intended for display in lighted display…where it could glow and show amazingly in a glass case after the light source was removed. I’d venture to guess though, that not many of Frankenstein glow edition figures sold are displayed like this today, and I am certainly glad that this example wasn’t opened. And for those who follow Sideshow Toy, or any of the high end toy makers in existence today for that matter, know that they all use the talents of World Class sculptors to design their products. The Frankenstein Glow In The Dark Boris Karloff Edition will not disappoint! Plus…it’s the rarest and most difficult to find item in the UNIVERSAL STUDIOS MONSTERS, Series One (and only) Glow In The Dark Sets. Originally, there was supposed to be a Series Two, which would contain the Creature From The Black Lagoon, Phantom of The Opera & The Bride of Frankentstein…but to this day…17 years later…Sideshow Toys still has not released Series Two. The odds are against it…but we can only hope they change their minds and release Series Two, because collectors would pounce on those like a cat on a mouse!
The Frankenstein Glow In The Dark Boris Karloff Edition is the rarest piece of the series, and it’s a must have for any Universal Studios Monsters collector. In our collection, we’ve now got the entire Glow In The Dark SERIES ONE SET MISP (mint sealed in package), and they are joyfully displayed in an LED lit glass case. The only question to ask now is, what’s the possibility that we’ll actually want to let these go? Well…you’re going to have to pay up if you want this highly desirable set, that’s about all we can say.
Not only is the Universal Studios Monsters Glow In The Dark Frankenstein variant a tough and pricey find, it’s presence really ties the whole set together and drives up the value quite considerably. And, with the possibility of UNIVERSAL STUDIOS bringing back these old monster classics in the form of new monster movies (check out the DARK UNIVERSE trailer on YouTube…omg), the likelihood that this set will increase in value is absolutely certain.
Another thing to consider about the set, is something people don’t seem to discuss much…and that’s the quality of the glow material used by Sideshow on these figures. It’s incredibly powerful stuff, and the glow is off the charts. Most of these “glow in the dark” gimmicks are just that, gimmicks. Not these. You hit these with light and the glow is remarkably strong, and lasts for a considerably long time…longer than we’ve ever seen on a figure before. Thought this was important to note…
