FRANKENSTEIN “Glow In The Dark”by UNIVERSAL STUDIOS: Frankenstein is a 1931 American pre-Code horror monster film from Universal Pictures directed by James Whale and adapted from the play by Peggy Webling (which in turn is based on the novel of the same name by Mary Shelley), about a scientist and his assistant who dig up corpses to build a man animated by electricity, but his assistant accidentally gives the creature an abnormal, murderer’s brain. The resultant monster is portrayed by Boris Karloff in the film.

The movie stars Colin Clive, Mae Clarke, John Boles and Karloff, and features Dwight Frye and Edward van Sloan. The Webling play was adapted by John L. Balderston and the screenplay written by Francis Edward Faragoh and Garrett Fort with uncredited contributions from Robert Florey and John Russell. The make-up artist was Jack Pierce. A hit with both audiences and critics, the film was followed by multiple sequels and has become arguably the most iconic horror film in history.

In 1991, the Library of Congress selected Frankenstein for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

The Wolf Man by UNIVERSAL MONSTERS: During the 1940s, Universal released The Wolf Man (1941), with Lon Chaney Jr. The junior Chaney became the studio’s leading monster movie actor in the 1940s, just as his father had been two decades earlier, supplanting the 1930s’ Karloff and Lugosi by a wide margin in terms of the number of leading roles that he played. Chaney Jr. physically resembled his father apart from usually being somewhat overweight, which the senior Chaney never was. The studio dropped the “Jr.” from the junior Chaney’s billing almost immediately to confuse some in the audiences into assuming that this was the same actor.

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS MONSTERS – THE MUMMY “Glow In The Dark” Boris Karloff Edition – MISP

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS The Mummy is a 1932 American pre-Code horror film directed by Karl Freund. The screenplay by John L. Balderston was from a story by Nina Wilcox Putnam and Richard Schayer. Released by Universal Studios, the film stars Boris Karloff, Zita Johann, David Manners, Edward Van Sloan and Arthur Byron. The film is about an ancient Egyptian mummy named Imhotep who is discovered by a team of archeologists and inadvertently brought back to life through a magic scroll. Disguised as a modern Egyptian, the mummy searches for his lost love, who he believes has been reincarnated into a modern girl.

In 1921, an archaeological expedition led by Sir Joseph Whemple (Arthur Byron) finds the mummy of an ancient Egyptian high priest named Imhotep (Boris Karloff). When an inspection of the mummy by Whemple’s friend Dr. Muller (Edward Van Sloan) reveals that the viscera were not removed, Muller deduces that although Imhotep had been wrapped like a traditional mummy, he had been buried alive. Also buried with Imhotep is a casket with a curse on it. Despite Muller’s warning, Sir Joseph’s assistant Ralph Norton (Bramwell Fletcher) opens it. He reads aloud an ancient life-giving scroll, the “Scroll of Thoth”. Imhotep rises and escapes with the scroll. Norton is driven insane.

Ten years later, Imhotep is masquerading as a modern Egyptian named Ardath Bey. He calls upon Sir Joseph’s son Frank (David Manners) and Professor Pearson (Leonard Mudie) and shows them where to dig to find the tomb of the princess Ankh-es-en-amon. After locating the tomb, the archaeologists present its treasures to the Cairo Museum and thank Bey for making their discovery possible. It is further revealed that Imhotep’s horrific death was punishment for sacrilege: attempting to resurrect his forbidden lover, Princess Ankh-es-en-amon.

Imhotep soon encounters Helen Grosvenor (Zita Johann), a half-Egyptian woman bearing a striking resemblance to the princess. Believing her to be Ankh-es-en-amon’s reincarnation, he attempts to kill her, with the intention of mummifying her, resurrecting her, and finally making her his bride. She is saved when she remembers her past life and prays to the goddess Isis to save her. The statue of Isis raises its arm and emits a beam of light that sets the Scroll of Thoth on fire. This breaks the spell that had given Imhotep his immortality, causing him to crumble to dust. At the urging of Dr. Muller, Frank calls Helen back to the world of the living while the Scroll of Thoth continues to burn.

ABOUT THE SET – RARE SERIES ONE Glow-In-The-Dark Cornerstone Set

All Sculpts by Oluf W. Hartvigson: Released in 2001 by Sideshow Toy, the SERIES ONE GLOW IN THE DARK set was intended for display in lighted display…where it could glow and show amazingly in a glass case after the light source was removed. For those who follow Sideshow Toy, or any of the high end toy makers in existence today for that matter, know that they all use the talents of World Class sculptors to design their products. The UNIVERSAL MONSTERS SERIES ONE “Glow In The Dark” set will not disappoint! Plus…it’s even more rare to find a complete SERIES ONE mint set that collectors are willing to let go of. Originally, there was supposed to be a second series, Series Two, which would have contained the Creature From The Black Lagoon, Phantom of The Opera & The Bride of Frankentstein…but to this day…17 years later…Sideshow Toys still has not released Series Two. The odds are against it…but we can only hope they change their minds and release Series Two, because collectors would pounce on those like a cat on a mouse!

Not only is the Universal Studios Monsters Glow In The Dark SERIES ONE a tough set to locate complete, it’s becoming more and more difficult to find collectors willing to sell…especially the FRANKENSTEIN variant. And, with the possibility of UNIVERSAL STUDIOS bringing back these old monster classics in the form of new monster movies (check out the DARK UNIVERSE trailer on YouTube…omg), the likelihood that this set will increase in value is absolutely certain.

Another thing to consider about the set, is something people don’t seem to discuss much…and that’s the quality of the glow material used by Sideshow on these figures. It’s incredibly powerful stuff, and the glow is off the charts. Most of these “glow in the dark” gimmicks are just that, gimmicks. Not these. You hit these with light and the glow is remarkably strong, and lasts for a considerably long time…longer than we’ve ever seen on a figure before. Thought this was important to note…
